Electric Vehicle Power Transfer Systems
Article 625
NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2023 edition · Reviewed 2026-09-21
The exam's "Electrical Vehicle Chargers" items come almost entirely from six rules: the individual branch circuit (625.40), the continuous load (625.41/625.42 → 125 % conductor and OCPD sizing), the cord lengths (625.17), the disconnecting means (625.43), the receptacle configurations (625.44), and GFCI for EV receptacles (625.54). Written from the 2023 text of Article 625 (the Georgia edition — NEC 2023 with Georgia amendments; 2023 section numbers throughout — the 2023 article has no emergency-shutoff or 125 % attachment-plug rule).
1. Scope, voltages, listing (Part I)
- 625.1: the electrical conductors and equipment connecting an electric vehicle to premises wiring for charging, power export, or bidirectional current flow. Vocabulary: EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment), WPTE (wireless power transfer equipment), EVPE (electric vehicle power export equipment). Informational references: UL 2594 (EVSE), UL 2202 (charging system equipment), UL 2750 (wireless power transfer), NECA 413.
- 625.4 voltages: the equipment is supplied from nominal ac systems of 120, 120/240, 208Y/120, 240, 480Y/277, 480, 600Y/347, 600 or 1000 V, or dc up to 1000 V; the output voltage to the vehicle is not specified by the article.
- 625.6: EV power transfer system equipment for charging, power export or bidirectional current flow is listed.
