Appliances and Fixed Electric Space Heating

"Appliances" and "Heating Equipment" are two of the sub-topics of the Equipment & Devices area, and they carry the classic calculation items on both Georgia exams (water-heater circuit sizing, heater subdivision, 150 % OCPD sizing). 1. Article 422 — the appliance rules

GFCI and listing

• 422.5: Class A GFCI protection for these appliances, 150 V or less to ground and 60 A or less: automotive vacuum machines; drinking water coolers and bottle-fill stations; cord-and-plug high-pressure spray washers; tire inflation machines; vending machines; sump pumps; dishwashers. The GFCI is readily accessible and may be the breaker, a device in the circuit, integral to the plug, in the cord within 12 in. of the plug, or factory- installed in the appliance. 210.8 still governs the outlet location.
• 422.6: appliances supplied by 50 V or more shall be listed.

Branch circuits and overcurrent protection

• 422.10(A) individual branch circuit: conductor ampacity ≥ the marked rating; motor- operated appliances without a marked rating → Article 430 Part II; an appliance that is a continuous load (other than motor-operated) needs a branch-circuit rating ≥ 125 % of the marked rating (100 % if the OCPD assembly is listed for continuous operation at 100 %); household ranges and cooking appliances may be sized from Table 220.55 per 210.19(C).
• 422.10(B): circuits supplying appliances and other loads → 210.23.
• 422.11(A): the branch-circuit OCPD per 240.4, and never above an OCPD rating marked on the appliance.
• 422.11(B): household cooking appliances with surface heating elements and a maximum demand over 60 A (Table 220.55) → subdivided into two or more circuits, each protected at not over 50 A.
• 422.11(C)/(D): infrared lamp commercial heating appliances and open-coil/exposed sheathed-coil commercial heating appliances → OCPD ≤ 50 A.
• 422.11(E) single non-motor-operated appliance — the OCPD shall:
  1. not exceed the rating marked on the appliance;
