Luminaires: Article 410 — Locations, Closets, Supports, Recessed Luminaires, Track and Discharge Lighting

"Luminaires" is a named sub-topic in the Equipment & Devices area on both Georgia exams. The testable material clusters around a dozen numbers: the tub/shower zone, the clothes-closet storage space, the 6-lb/16-in. screw-shell limit, recessed clearances (½ in. / 3 in.), tap conductor lengths (18 in.–6 ft), the 1000-V neon rule, and lighting-track supports. 1. Listing, live parts, locations — 410.2 to 410.14
- 410.6: all luminaires, lampholders and retrofit kits shall be listed. 410.2: reconditioned luminaires, lampholders, ballasts, LED drivers, lamps and retrofit kits not permitted (a luminaire fitted with a retrofit kit per its instructions is not "reconditioned").
- 410.5: no live parts normally exposed to contact; cleat-type lampholders at least 8 ft above the floor may have exposed terminals. 410.8: the luminaire-to-circuit conductor connections must be inspectable without disconnecting wiring (unless plug-connected).
- 410.10(A) wet/damp: water shall not enter wiring compartments; wet locations → luminaire marked suitable for wet locations; damp → marked suitable for wet or damp.
- 410.10(C) commercial cooking hoods: luminaire identified for the hood, vapor-tight, corrosion-resistant smooth surfaces, no wiring exposed within the hood.
- 410.10(D) bathtub and shower areas: no parts of cord-connected, chain-, cable- or cord-suspended luminaires, lighting track, pendants, or paddle fans with light kits within the 3 ft horizontal / 8 ft vertical zone from the top of the tub rim or shower threshold (all-encompassing, including directly over the tub); luminaires within the tub/shower footprint up to 8 ft → marked damp, or wet where subject to shower spray.
- 410.10(F): luminaires in or under roof decking where subject to damage — ≥ 1½ in. from the lowest surface of the decking (exception: metal-corrugated decking covered by ≥ 2 in. of concrete).
